What is the difference between celiac disease and allergy against wheat and other cereals?
Allergies include hypersensitivity reactions and formation of specific IgE (immunoglobulin E) antibodies against cereals such as wheat and rye. These antibodies may result in some complaints similar to that of celiac disease. But, such symptoms will occur in a short time after you have taken the food against which you have developed an allergy. Although the reactions may be severe or mild, they have a limited impact and they do not damage the layer inside your intestine as celiac disease does. If you think that you may have allergy against wheat or another cereal food, you should consult your doctor who may order these specific IgE antibody tests for you.
